Arthropod Diversity between Undisturbed and Disturbed Habitats of South Miami, Florida

چکیده
Arthropod diversity between disturbed and undisturbed habitats was studied. Arthropods are organisms that have six or more jointed legs, there are numerous in species and can be found in several different habitats. In our experiment, we wanted to test if there was a significant difference in arthropod diversity between undisturbed and disturbed areas of South Florida. We focused on two Miami-Dade County locations, Tropical Park and Thompson Park, to sweep net for arthropods. All of the contents captured during sweep netting were placed in plastic zip lock bags and were frozen for later observation, classification, sorting, and pinning. Utilizing Simpson’s Index we verified that we could reject our null hypothesis and that there was a significant difference in arthropod diversity among disturbed and undisturbed habitats. Also, we found that we could support our prediction that there was more diversity in the undisturbed habitats than the disturbed habitats.

Terrestrial Arthropods as Indicators of Ecological Restoration Success in Coastal Sage Scrub (California, U.S.A.)
Ecological restoration enjoys widespread use as a technique to mitigate for environmental damage. Success of a restoration project often is evaluated on the basis of plant cover only. Recovery of a native arthropod fauna is also important to achieve conservation goals. I sampled arthropod communities by pitfall trapping in undisturbed, disturbed, and restored coastal sage scrub habitats in sout...
متن کاملRoughing it: a mantellid poison frog shows greater alkaloid diversity in some disturbed habitats.
Four five-skin alkaloid extracts of the Madagascan poison frog Mantella baroni from three disturbed collection sites were compared with four five-skin extracts from three undisturbed sites. The number of alkaloids (diversity) was significantly different in M. baroni between undisturbed and disturbed collection sites, with more alkaloids generally being found in frogs from disturbed sites. Two u...
متن کاملBiogeographical kinetics on an island volcano (Cape- linhos, Azores): fast colonisation rates and dominance of arthropod exotic species
1. The aim of this paper was to investigate the arthropod colonisation of a recently erupted volcano in the framework of a general model of colonisation kinetics. 2. We analysed the diversity of arthropod communities at three locations on Faial Island (Azores) using a well-defined disturbance gradient: (i) a site that is new land added by the eruption of Capelinhos Volcano of 1957; (ii) a site ...
متن کاملDisturbance Alters the Phylogenetic Composition and Structure of Plant Communities in an Old Field System
The changes in phylogenetic composition and structure of communities during succession following disturbance can give us insights into the forces that are shaping communities over time. In abandoned agricultural fields, community composition changes rapidly when a field is plowed, and is thought to reflect a relaxation of competition due to the elimination of dominant species which take time to...
